MINISTRY OF INFORMATION UPDATE
-George Orwell
I really wouldn't be doing a good job here if I didn't at least point to this amazing opinion piece at the New York Times. Ordinarily I give their op ed page a wide berth: the less people pay them heed, the less impact and influence they have, which is more or less what they deserve. Yet this is not so much about the NYT as what I see as inevitable wide-spread attempts to rewrite history 1984-style.
Thomas Friedman starts out by talking about how Iraq was such a total disaster, an inescapable quagmire, a total loss that Senator Obama and the New York Times was wise to call for surrender in and retreat from. Then he goes on to note that things are bizarrely going incredibly well there. Why, there are shops open, courts protecting freedoms, children happy. It's almost as if we won!
Then he goes to work at the Ministry of Information.
Quoth Thomas Friedman:
Never mind that he just spent eleven previous paragraphs describing how Iraq is doing well, never mind that anyone who has been paying attention knows that for over a year, the country has been doing amazingly well, no it's barely hanging on to a possible hope of success that only The One can bring about with Democratic Party power.
Watch for this spin as the days go by: any success in Iraq is due to Democrats, due to rejection of President Bush, and due to President Obama's transcendent policies and incomparable genius and glory. In other words: the left can shift the narrative from quagmire and disaster to success, peace, and everything President Bush set out to do - and accomplished - before Obama was even elected.

If he can pull this off, and help that decent Iraq take root, Obama and the Democrats could not only end the Iraq war but salvage something positive from it. Nothing would do more to enhance the Democratic Party’s national security credentials than that.Get that? Obam and the Democrats are the ones in charge here, they pulled it off, and given time, they can get a wonderful Iraq.
